After a long winter, spring selling season is finally here. That means it’s time to start sprucing up your exterior and doing some much-needed spring cleaning. A clean home (and well-kept landscape) will be more inviting to prospective buyers and can help you get a “sold” sign up faster.
Start with the windows. Clean your windows, blinds, shades or whatever else you have on the windows. Clean windows will let the sun shine through and brighten up your home. Tip: use newspaper to wipe the windows to avoid streaking.
Walls, baseboards and more. It may seem weird to wash the walls, but grease, dirt, smoke and other “gunk” can build up on your walls. Giving them a good scrub can brighten them up and give your home a fresh, clean smell. Make sure you don’t miss the baseboards and door frames while you’re at it.
Floors require a professional. Unless you have your own heavy duty carpet shampooer, you probably need to call in a professional to make sure your carpets are in tip top shape and free of any stains. For hardwood floors, mop the floor going with the grain and then buff it with a cloth.
One word, baking soda. Ok, that’s two words, but the product is very versatile and will eliminate the toughest smells. Use it to clean the inside (and underneath) of the refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher by mixing it with a little water. Adding a little lemon juice will help too.
No more clutter. Clutter needs to be removed from every room. Designate containers as for sale, charity or the trash as you go. Walkways should always be clear and whatever is left should look clean and organized.
Finishing touches. Don’t forget to dust any surfaces such as light fixtures, dressers, bed frames, counter tops, etc.
Don’t neglect your exterior. Warmer temperatures in the spring make it easier to get out and tidy up your landscape. Clean your gutters, give your home a fresh coat of paint and plant some flowers or plants to amp up your curb appeal.
